I’m fine just the way I am!

Have you ever played with a child? I have 10 nieces and nephews and each one of them is very different. However, everyone likes to play hide and seek when they were little. I could have hidden behind those hands and then suddenly revealed myself for hours with a giggle at a time. If I were to walk up to any of the post-kindergarten kids right now and do that, they’d look at me like a complete jerk. Why don’t you like this fun game anymore? They got more complicated and now require more intellectual effort to impress.

We get the same way. What if every time I see you I tell you the same joke? You may have laughed the first time and possibly the second, but over time it loses its luster. This is not only true with fun and games, but in all aspects of our lives. We make something that works for us and then never change it until it’s clearly obvious that it’s no longer producing. In other words, we get a win, and then we think the same solution will work every time.

That is why we must continually improve. If we become complacent we also stagnate. That can lead to others not coming to us because they know we are one dimensional and will only do things our way. In reality, every problem has a unique solution. Although the routes may be similar to last time, the solution will vary.

It’s like exercising to build muscle. I can do the exact same workout every day for a year. At first, I’ll get results I’m happy with and even increase my weights and reps. Eventually, I’m going to stabilize and stop getting better. This is because I’m not changing anything and my muscles basically get bored.

The only way to grow is to continually improve. We do this by challenging ourselves in every walk of our lives. If it’s about our spiritual journeys, we can add a new twist to our studies or listen to audiobooks while driving. Maybe you always wanted to write a book. Instead of waiting until you have a month of free time to start, just write one paragraph a day or even a week. Eventually, it will have a chapter and then the entire book.

Self improvement is not a total overhaul. If it’s about that point for you, then you’re way behind. Improving yourself will keep you fresh and allow you to move from hiding to a much larger intellectual world. All it takes is a little effort and an open mind. Peek-A-Boo, I see you still sitting there… move on!
