Jamaica’s new international airport: why name it after an Englishman?

To say that I was shocked by the news of the opening of another international airport in Jamaica would be an exaggeration. But my interest was certainly piqued when I noticed that it was not named after some son of earth, such as a deceased politician or a sports champion.

In fact, the name is Fleming. Ian Fleming! The small airport, formerly known as Boscobel Aerodrome, has been updated and renamed in honor of the creator of James Bond, the handsome British spy, who continues to thrill audiences around the world with his daring adventures, high-tech gadgets and the seduction of beautiful women. Not forgetting that he was an astute linguist.

Ian Fleming wrote the James Bond novels at his Jamaican home, Goldeneye, which is near the new airport that bears his name. James Bond migrated from novels to the big screen in the 1960s and the franchise is still going strong with more than twenty feature films released. Several of the films have been shot in Jamaica, most notably the first in the series, “Dr. No,” which features the now iconic bikini-clad Ursula Andress, as Honey Ryder, emerging from the Caribbean Sea in Dunn’s River. Falls

Ian Fleming International Airport opened for private jets and small commercial aircraft with a customs and immigration terminal to facilitate international travel. About ten miles east of Ocho Rios, the airport is conveniently located to serve that area and Portland on the eastern tip of the island.

Shocking Positively shocking have been complaints that the airport is not named after a Jamaican, but in memory of an Englishman, Ian Fleming. The Prime Minister of Jamaica dismissed these negatives, arguing that the island inspired the author and, in turn, has benefited from a higher profile internationally. I think you got the point.

The Jamaican government has named its new international airport after an Englishman, obviously betting that the glamor and fame of Ian Fleming and James Bond will help the upscale tourism market, and that both local and foreign businessmen will not only They will be watching, but they will realize the enormous potential that this improved airport facility offers the region, which will lead to significant major investments.
