Step-by-step guide on how to fold a suit jacket for wrinkle-free travel

Where does one start when traveling in good clothes? You have invested a lot of money to dress well and be presentable on business trips and meetings when you arrive at your destination. Sometimes you need to get off a plane or train and go straight to work, and that could mean jet lag, hungry, thirsty, and carrying your bags from one place to another.

Fortunately, most of us use wheeled bags to get around the airport. Remember the days of lugging huge pieces of stuffed luggage that you could barely carry? I make. What has been happening in the cell phone industry is the exact opposite of what is happening in the travel industry. Mobile phones or smartphones are getting bigger and hand luggage is getting smaller and smaller. More and more we have to pack less and less so as not to be bothered by checked luggage or by paying a fine to the airlines for being overweight in our checked bags.

This brings me to the topic of this article, how to fold a suit jacket without incurring wrinkles. I would like to emphasize that this technique can be used for both men and women. You could even fold lightweight outerwear and shirts with this method. The centerpiece of this fold, which my grandfather taught me, who learned from his father, is turning the bulkiest pieces of clothing into the last pieces. What you have to take care of is the structure of your jackets. When folding tailored clothing, the most important part of avoiding wrinkles is not creasing your shoulders or neck. These areas are pressed many times in a garment factory to shape it to fit the body. That is what makes a garment fit you so well, how many times it has been ironed during its creation.

The question now is how to fold a suit jacket to avoid wrinkles and not fold over the neck and shoulder area. Follow me here as it can be a bit tricky to explain this, but it’s not really difficult to do and it only takes a few seconds. You do not need another person or a table to place the jacket on.

Take each hand and spread your fingers.

1-Put each hand inside the shoulders of your jackets with the jacket opening towards you. Now your hands should be placed under what are called the collar points of the jacket.

2-Put your two hands, palms together with them inside the shoulder area of the jacket.

3-Now with your right hand, grab the left shoulder of the jacket from the inside and remove your left hand. You should now hold the jacket with your right hand and your left hand is now free.

4-Use your left hand to lift the collar and the lapels so that they are now facing outwards.

5-With the left hand as support, hold the upper part of the collar that is now facing upwards and with the right hand pull both shoulders to the right side while turning with the collar on the left turning the shoulder straps one inside the other.

6-With both hands, align the flaps so that the notch or peak lines up.

7-Holding the neck again for support with the neck up and the lapels together and with the right hand, push the shoulders to the other side. Now the jacket should be in the middle vertically and the shoulders are still in their rounded shape pressed just one inside the other.

8-For the last step, fold the jacket in half horizontally over your arm and there you have it. You have just learned how to fold a suit jacket and pack it wrinkle free.

The jacket is now completely flat. The shoulders are not wrinkled or squashed. The necklace will keep its shape. Now you can pack the jackets one on top of the other in this way in your luggage by alternating the position of the shoulders, making sure to make the most of your luggage space.
