Do German Shepherds make good companions?

German Shepherds are one of the most popular dogs in the world, usually ranking second or third when it comes to popularity in the world. Considering that these dogs were developed only about a hundred years ago, this is a remarkable feat.

The German Shepherd was developed as a herding dog. However, it was not intended to be a pure sheepdog, but was also required to protect sheep from attack by wolves. If you have seen wolves, you will know that as big as the German Shepherd is, it is still very small compared to a wolf. However, they were bred to be totally fearless and to protect their owner and their property with their lives. Although this was their job, they also spent a considerable amount of time with their masters in the field and thus became very good companions. They were smart enough to follow sentences and not just word commands, and in many cases acted on their own initiative.

All this makes them very good companion dogs even now. They are highly intelligent and will bond with their owners on a very adult level. You won’t find them jumping and licking when they grow up, their greeting will be limited to a couple of mother barks, something like a puppy like handshake. However, you will never have any doubts about their affection for you because everything they do will revolve around you.

His bond with his owner is so great that his character depends more on the type of person the owner is. They take on characteristics of their owners and looking at the dog is a good reflection of what kind of person the owner is.

You should also realize that your dog needs a lot more exercise than you do. A German Shepherd is easier to walk because he is very obedient and can be trained very easily. For example, it won’t even take five reps to get him moving, after which you can take him outside off-leash. All you have to do is pedal and he will jog alongside you with no problem. In fact, the very fact that you trust him enough off leash will make him more obedient if anything.
