English Bull Terrier – A Guide and Introduction

English Bull Terriers can sometimes get a bad rap for being quite aggressive dogs, but there is not much truth to this statement. This breed is instantly recognizable by its unusual head shape, which has been described as an egg-shaped head. Some people think they look ugly or weird, but in my opinion they look beautiful.

Another characteristic of this breed of dog is its triangular eyes, which are quite small and are also set deep in the head. They are very stocky and muscular dogs and also very powerful, hence probably the nickname “the gladiator of the dog race”.

To get an idea of why these dogs were bred this way, we need to go back in time, when they first appeared. It was around the 19th century that two popular breeds called the Bull and later the Terrier were first interbred. This was because they wanted a better fighting dog than the one the Bull breed was giving. The idea was that if they crossed the two races together, it would increase the tenacity and energy needed to fight. They were also bred for vermin control use.

So after the bull and terrier were crossed, the name of the new breed was Bull Terrier and then Staffordshire bull Terrier, the English Bull Terrier had not been bred yet, but the time was coming!

1860 would be the time of the idea of the English bull terrier, all thanks to a man named James Hinks. It was this man who decided to start breeding Bulls and Terriers with English White Terriers, mainly because he wanted a nicer, cleaner looking dog with a better head. That was not the actual time these dogs were named English Bull Terriers, this took many more years.

The dog that James Hinks had bred was very popular with the people and he continued to breed until the English Bull Terrier was born. They used to be just white in color, but now they can be any color: white, brindle, pink, and others.

These dog breeds have appeared in numerous movie appearances, from pigs in the city to TV appearances like Barking Mad. This is all due to their good looks and fun loving nature, they are also very intelligent dogs, but they can be quite stubborn when they want to be so they are best trained by an experienced owner.

Although this breed was originally bred for fighting and vermin control, two hobbies that necessitated a dog with an aggressive streak. These days, dogs are not bred for that purpose and have very playful and fun-loving temperaments. Don’t get me wrong though, they are fearless and will fight for the owner if they think the owner is in trouble.

The English Bull Terrier is a great breed and can be a loving family dog, like all dogs that need to be raised with responsible owners. They can also be good with children, although the child does need to make sure that the dog knows who is boss, as soon as he thinks he is in control problems can arise. They need a steady hand and sensitive training.
