Flu protection using face masks

In times of flu outbreaks, people look for ways to stay safe. There are a lot of rumors about what works and what doesn’t. Frequent hand washing, wearing masks, and using hand sanitizer are just a few of the preventative measures people use to rid their bodies of germs. The best way to avoid the flu is to avoid common areas and crowded settings where the virus can spread. However, not everyone has the option of staying home to wait. Work, school, and travel take us into areas like airplanes, schools, and shopping malls, which are areas of risk.

One way to lower your chances of getting infected with the flu virus is to wear a mask. The effectiveness of the mask varies depending on several factors, including how you use it, what type you choose, and the use of proper removal techniques.

There are a couple of different forms of masks to consider. The first is a soft, flexible mask that is tied around the head. They are usually cheaply priced and come in large quantities. These are often referred to as medical masks. A second and more expensive type of mask is the form-fitting type that is pre-made to fit snugly around the face for a snug fit. These types are made of thin fibers that work to filter out particles that come in when you breathe.

Surgical masks are intended to protect doctors from mucus and other fluids that are projected into the air by patients. They are capable of filtering out 95 percent of most small particles and are effective against the flu virus. For the best protection against the flu virus in a consumer-grade mask, look for one rated N95 or higher. The N95 mark is a designation given by the FDA that tells you the level of protection you are receiving.

When you have your mask, it is important that you put it on correctly so that it works well. Put the mask on your face and tie it snugly. You don’t want holes or gaps anywhere around the edges. Any space can provide an easy way for germs to enter, because the inhaled air will completely bypass the filter.

Wear the mask when entering any situation with multiple people. Keep the mask on until you have left the area. Removing your mask could allow the virus to fall into the material, causing you to inhale it when you reapply the mask. If you are caring for someone who is sick (perhaps your child), you can protect yourself by wearing a mask in their presence. Also, consider wearing a mask if you are sick to prevent others from catching the illness.

Whether you choose a surgical mask or any other type, you can be more calm when you are with strangers. The flu virus can be scary, but by taking preventive measures, you can protect yourself and others.
