Leopard Gecko Shedding Problems: Causes and Simple Solutions

Shedding, or the lack of it, is one of the main problems with raising a gecko. Many leopard gecko shedding problems have different causes and solutions, but any problem with their shedding ability can be very deadly for your pet. What are some of the causes of leopard gecko shedding problems and how do we fix these problems so our pet can shed safely and smoothly? In many cases, three things that lead to shedding problems are: lack of water or moisture, vitamin deficiency or parasites.

The number one reason behind leopard gecko shedding problems is water or lack of moisture in the tank. Having a wet skin in your pet’s tank will solve almost all problems related to molting. This extra moisture helps loosen your pet’s skin. This makes it much easier for them to throw correctly without much trouble. This is especially true of the areas around the eyes and on the toes. These two areas can be major problem areas when it comes to moving. Any skin that hasn’t shed will cause circulation problems that could lead to loss of sight or even loss of toes. If your pet has unwanted fur in these areas, it is very important that you do not take it offbut find ways to help your Leo shed that skin naturally.

What can you do to help your Leo when he starts to shed? Provide wet or moist skin to shed. If that doesn’t work and there is still skin that hasn’t fallen off, you can also bathe your Leo in lukewarm water for about 10 minutes. This bath should loosen the skin that could cause circulation problems.

Lack of vitamins is another cause of leopard gecko molting problems. This can be fixed very easily with a vitamin supplement. Many times it is the lack of vitamin A in Leo’s system that can cause problems with shedding. Simply administer the appropriate dose, as directed by a veterinarian, in your pets’ food or water.

Parasites are also a concern when a Leo has trouble moving. The easiest place to look for parasites is between your pet’s toes. If there is any evidence of parasites, you should take him to the vet so he can prescribe the right antibiotic for the type of parasite he has found.
