Manual or automatic tilting umbrella, point by point

When it’s sunny outside, people flock to their patios to lounge, barbecue and entertain outdoors. An automatic tilt umbrella or manual tilt umbrella will keep the party going by offering resentment when the sun’s rays get too strong. What type should you go with? Let’s stack them face to face.

Appearance

Manual: Manual tilt umbrellas are tried and true, the classic model. They have the same benefits as the auto-tilt umbrella, only with a little more work. The push button tilt has been around for a long time, almost as long as the modern patio umbrella. It comes from the basic peg hole system, with a few modifications. On these models, a button can be found near the top of the umbrella pole, curved inward and made of metal.

Automatic: The automatic tilt umbrella has become a staple on decks and patios across the country. Although simple in idea, the mechanization of patio umbrellas has made entertaining outdoors more convenient. They usually include an aluminum post that opens using a crank mechanism. It is then locked at a suitable height above the table or independently.

Function

Manual – When pressed, the button releases an internal lock on the umbrella pole that allows you to tilt. Unlike the automatic tilt version, there are often not two or three preset positions, so you will have to manually position it where you want it.

Automatic – The automatic tilt umbrella goes one step further with an additional feature. Once fully open, if you keep turning the crank, the umbrella will tilt at a number of angles. Because the tilt is dependent on the stress on the post rather than the fit of the joint, it can tilt much more without the danger of tipping over.

Pros

Manual – Some people prefer the wider range of angle options offered by having to manually set the position, which is ideal for concentrated and perfectionist shadows. Another benefit is that these umbrellas are cheaper than mechanical ones.

Automatic – The automatic tilt umbrella is perfect for tables, poolside, or wherever a little extra shade is desired. The good thing about automatic models is that they reduce the stress on your back by not having to push to open the whole umbrella, but simply having to do the smallest starting movement. Also, tilt umbrellas are nice because you can control where you want your shade. The sun will change your shade significantly throughout the day, so instead of having to move your chair every few hours, just move the umbrella. It is perfect for smaller areas where space is an issue.

Cons

Manual – Manual tilt umbrellas have some disadvantages. For one thing, there is a slight danger of pinching your finger on the tilt button or lever. Also, having to hold down the button while tipping the umbrella yourself can be unwieldy and difficult for fragile and small people. However, most people have no problem with this, so it is ultimately a matter of personal preference.

Automatic: The only bad thing about the automatic tilt umbrella is that sometimes some mechanical models break down after prolonged use or due to faulty production.
