Nimerigar: a creature of cryptozoology

Basically, the legends and folk tales are without foundation. Most of us believe that little people only exist in folklore alongside giants, goblins, fairies, and ghosts. Legends tell us that little people used to inhabit the surface of the earth. They coexisted with humans. However, they went underground because they were mistreated by the “big” people. We find stories about little people in all cultures and in all countries of the world.

These tiny people who live in caves, in forests and near lakes and rivers often play pranks on people. These dwarves would hide human belongings, take children from cruel parents. Some folk tales say that these little people are shown to children and, once seen by an adult, they beg the person not to reveal their existence. They would offer bribes and promise to help the family in times of need.

If there are friendly little people, there are also cruel dwarves. The Shoshone Indians of the Rocky Mountains of North America also share the folklore. The story of the malevolent race of dwarves was re-told from generation to generation. According to the Shoshone tale, the Nimerigar are violent and destructive little people who lived on the Wind River and in the mountains of Wyoming, particularly in the Pedro Range.

The nimerigar are small and spiteful people. They would fight humans using small bows to shoot poisoned arrows. When a Nimerigar becomes too ill to be of any use to their society, they kill him with a blow to the head. Many stories were told about these little people, but as always, they were conceived as the product of someone’s fertile imagination until a skeleton was found in 1932 that was speculated to be the remains of a Nimerigar.

The Pedro Mountain Mummy, also known as the Wyoming Dwarf Mummy, was found by Cecil Main and Frank Carr. These two prospectors blew up a rock wall in the Pedro Mountains. And they found the 14-inch mummy sitting cross-legged on a small rock ledge. The hands are folded in the lap, not like a Buddha. The dark brown skin is wrinkled; the nose extends flat and out. The mummy has a low forehead and a wide, thin-lipped mouth. The mummy is well preserved, in fact the nails can be clearly seen. The mummy was studied by archaeologists. The X-ray showed that the skull was crushed by a strong blow. This fact led some experts to conclude that the skeleton is a Nimerigar.

There is a website that describes the Nimerigar and many other cryptozoology creatures in detail, this website is called: Unknown Creatures and it can be found at this url: unknown-creatures.com
