Airports Serving Chicago

There are two airports serving the Chicago area: O’Hare International and Midway. O’Hare (ORD) is the larger of the two airports, serving more than 70 million travelers a year. Located 20 miles from the city center, there are many transportation options including public transportation, taxis, shuttle services, and car rentals.

O’Hare is an airport filled with modern amenities and services. Recent improvements have been completed at international Terminal 5 and additional renovations are underway at Terminals 2 and 3. The projected completion date is later this year.

Midway (MDW) is significantly smaller than O’Hare and serves 17 million travelers per year, but is only 10 miles from downtown. The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) provides transportation from the Midway to downtown Chicago via Orange Line buses. Other transportation services, regional buses and of course taxis and car services also provide transportation to the center.

Midway has all the amenities you’d expect from a major airport, including restaurants and gift shops. You can do some sightseeing in Concourse A, where the Battle of Midway Memorial and an SBD Dauntless dive bomber are located.

Getting around Chicago

Getting around the city is much easier in Chicago than in other big cities. Renting a car is a good option if you need to visit different places during your visit. The city has several major highways, but plan to avoid them between 7 am and 9 am and between 4 pm and 7 pm on weekdays; traffic delays can be very frustrating. To avoid traffic delays, Chicago’s train system can take you almost anywhere in the city, making it another good option for business travelers staying downtown.

The Loop is the heart of the downtown business district, named for the elevated train tracks that surround the area. All city addresses begin at the corner of State and Madison streets in The Loop, making the streets easy to navigate. Each increment of 400 in one direction is equal to a half mile.
