7 tips to prevent water heater repairs

There is nothing more frustrating than discovering, usually in the middle of the shower, that the water heater is no longer working. Sometimes it is discovered when you turn on the tap and you only get cold water and other times it can be discovered due to an unpleasant smell. Either way, dealing with a lack of hot water isn’t much fun!

But even more daunting than a lack of hot water is knowing that replacing your water heater is likely to be expensive, whether it’s the entire tank or just repair work being done. Consequently, it is important to know some basic steps to take to keep water repairs to a minimum. Let us begin:

Water heater repair prevention

  1. Make sure the temperature of your water heater is not higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Having it higher will not only mean that your utility bill will be more expensive, but making it harder means there is more wear and tear on the various parts.
  2. At least twice a year, check the pressure relief valve to make sure it is not corroded. Finding leaks or corrosion early means less chance of future problems.
  3. Schedule a maintenance visit with a plumber at least once a year to make sure all parts and pieces are working properly
  4. Check for sufficient ventilation, especially if you have a gas heater! If the vents are not working properly, your home can be invaded by toxic gases.
  5. Twice a year, take time to drain the water heater to remove any sediment. If sediment is allowed to accumulate, it can result in a variety of problems. You can drain the tank by first placing a 5 gallon bucket under the drain valve and then turning the valve counterclockwise to release a few gallons of water into the bucket. Then close the valve and proceed as usual.
  6. Test the valve for temperature and pressure by lifting the lever partially and then letting it snap into place. You should hear a gurgling sound indicating that some water has been released into the drain pan. If you don’t hear anything, it’s time to replace the valve.
  7. If you have a gas water heater, take time at least once a quarter to make sure the pilot light is on and to remove any soot buildup.
