Clutter and Hoarding: 7 Surprising Guidelines for Cleaning Your Trash Drawer

One of the most crowded places in any home is the garbage can. Have you ever noticed that every home has a kitchen or laundry drawer that is used to store all the oddities in the house? When looking for a nut pick, an air needle to inflate a ball, a single string, or a screwdriver, where do you look? In the garbage drawer, right? Often times those drawers get quite full.

Here are some simple tips you can use to clean out your trash drawer and finally replace those broken laces on your favorite athletic shoes with new white ones. Hey, I bet you have a new pair of shoelaces somewhere in that drawer. Doing so will make it easier for you to keep the shoes on your feet. Read on for 7 surprising guidelines for cleaning your trash drawer.

  1. It can be important to clean your garbage drawers, especially if they are bulky and only partially close when you close them. To start cleaning your trash drawer, just choose to do it.
  2. Divide the task into smaller time segments. Just set a timer and choose to clean for a short period of time. Then do something else for a while.
  3. Spread a newspaper on the floor. Unless you have something fragile in the draw, like a glass or a couple of glasses, carefully place things from the drawer on the newspaper. When you get to the contents at the bottom of the drawer, you can probably just dump the sand and dust on the spread newspaper.
  4. It’s probably smart to clean out your trash bin when there aren’t any little kids running around. They could step on something sharp that is exposed on the newspaper.
  5. Ask the whole family to join in the cleanup. It’s more fun doing things with someone than doing it alone.
  6. Turn on the radio, CD or MP3 player and listen to pleasant music while you work. Make it slow and smooth so that you feel calm listening to it, or play invigorating music if you like it better.
  7. Once you finish cleaning your garbage drawer, you may decide to line the drawer with some shelf paper or even brown paper from a grocery bag. I think this helps keep the drawer cleaner longer.
