Facial recognition biometrics applications

Facial recognition is a biometric software application that can identify a person through their digital image. The digital image here means the facial components of a person, such as the size of the lips, the shape of the cheekbones, etc. They are mainly used for security reasons but current trends indicate their application in multiple spheres like online shopping, gaming etc.

How does it work?

Face recognition works on the principle that different facial pointers are differentiated by the shape and size of the face. A facial recognition system identifies these differences as Nodal Points. Each human face has approximately 80 nodal points. These are measured in terms of:

nose width

lips size

jaw line length

depths of the eye socket

distance between eyes

cheekbone shape

The nodal points are then measured by creating a numerical code known as a Faceprint that represents the face in the database.

Some applications

Since the Face Recognition System (FRS) is innovative and reliable, its use and applications are increasing with the support of government and private companies.

financial security

Banks and financial institutions are using this technology to eliminate the usual methods of PIN and password protection that could be forged. FRS can also safeguard vaults and drop boxes against loot.

electronic commerce

It helps verify the identity of buyers and streamlines the purchase and transaction process.

Immigration

This serves as a bulwark against international terrorists who want to unleash terror on foreign soil. The efficiency in identifying a threat is multiplied by five, since it is difficult for human eyes to identify people from just a photograph.

law enforcement

An FRS application includes the acclaimed CABS computerized arrest, registration system and child protection measures. This is used globally to recover missing and exploited children. This helps verify abusers and traffickers.

Access control

FRS can help identify a person in your identity claims. Eliminates the risk of people getting fake keys and access cards.

Scene monitoring/analysis

FRS has the ability to extract, categorize and search for non-facial images such as scars, tattoos, marks, etc. The software is capable of identifying the exact people you want to find in a crowd. You can analyze archived video scenes for the precise faces.

Homeland Defense

Homeland defense is an important part of a country’s development. Countries around the world make sure this system helps them prevent terrorists from boarding planes by protecting critical infrastructure like dams, temples, bridges, power plants, etc.

AviationSecurity

Airports are slowly moving towards this technology for obvious reasons. In addition to the usual metal detectors and fortifications, the use of FRS can help identify and apprehend suspects without much work. Since most terrorists arrive via planes or ships, aviation becomes an important area to protect.

vote verification

Verify various government officials before voting and election campaigns. Also, stop voting forged and duplicate.

Facial recognition is one of the most popular biometric technologies along with iris scanning and fingerprints. However, FRS applications are on the rise and have made their way into the gaming industry as well. Due to the excellent features, your domain grows and will grow until this technology has not included each and every necessary sphere.
