Safety training in the oil and gas industry

The role of security rain is becoming more and more important these days. The aim is to train the entire UK offshore workforce through the MIST program by the end of 2010.

The MIST program has nine important security features:

1. Introduction to the hazardous marine environment

2. Work safely following regulatory safety measures

3. Assessment of the risks involved

4. Take advantage of the work permit

5. Platform integrity

6. Manual handling

7. Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH)

8. Work at height

9. Mechanical lifting

Employers, in due consultation with those responsible for a particular facility, should determine the various programs appropriate for their employees to keep their jobs relevant. Every person in the workforce in the oil and gas sector must undergo this MIST training program.

For workers who are new to this industry, an OPTIO (Oil and Gas Academy) approved 2-day safety training program is provided throughout the UK, covering the nine basic elements of MIST.

An OPITO-approved rapid e-learning tool is available to guide experienced offshore workers, covering the nine basic safety features and other unfamiliar areas of interest while also updating your training skills.

This training builds confidence that all co-workers are aware of and trained in all safety measures, and the UK is fast becoming the safest place to work in this oil and gas sector.

As MIST has become a new industry security standard, there is a constant demand among employers for this training and training providers need the appropriate OPITO approvals to meet this demand. Training providers must apply and demonstrate their skills to conduct training effectively.

The Basic Maritime Safety Induction and Emergency Training (BOSIET) is another 3-day safety training course that one must undertake in the oil and gas sector, which includes features such as:

• Provide information about the offshore industry

• Helicopter escape training

• Personal emergency survival training

• Training to use Totally Enclosed Motor Propelled Survival Craft or Lifeboats (TEMPSC) and Life Rafts

• Provide first aid after escaping.

• To fight fires using fire extinguishers and self-rescue breathing apparatus

• Work permit

• Emergency Breathing Systems (EBS)

In addition to these various training courses related to safe work, rules and regulations are provided. Various sea survival training, water confidence training is part of safety training through pool sessions. With the helicopter simulator training session, workers are trained to escape in helicopters, evacuate the place and the use of the correct safety equipment in an emergency. All safety trainings are given to workers to secure their lives and make offshore work as risk-free as possible. Adverse incidents or casualties due to lack of training are a setback for the organization as the oil and gas sector is one of the UK government’s main revenue generators and is escalating the growth of the economy.
