Whirlpool Washer Won’t Spin: How To Tell If It’s A Broken Engine Coupler

If your problem is that your Whirlpool Top Load Washer is not spinning your clothes, follow this procedure to determine if the problem is a broken motor coupler.

Put the washer on the regular cycle, heavy load, and let it fill. Once the washer fills to the selected level, the engine should start and the agitator should begin to agitate.

If you hear the engine running, but the agitator does not move at all, do the following. Stop the washing machine, put the timer on the spin cycle and let it run.

The motor coupler is made of two pieces of plastic called fingers and a piece of hard rubber that fits between the two fingers. When one of the plastic fingers breaks, the motor is no longer coupled to the transmission and the washing machine will not agitate or spin the clothes. Another reason is that the washing machine is used every day; normally the washing machine is used 3 times a week. So if you have a washing machine that is 5 years old and you use it every day, you have the wear and tear of a washing machine that is 10 years old.
