How I got rid of migraines without supplements or medications

Here is a brief history of my migraine headaches, why I think I have them, and what worked to eliminate these excruciatingly uncomfortable conditions after 7 years. I got them around 25 years old. They would start suddenly and put me in bed for 1 to 2 hours. Then they would dissolve and I would start to feel better again. I didn’t get them very often – about once every 3-4 months. However, after 7 years of suffering them, they seemed to be happening more frequently.

At this point, I have not had a headache for 10 months. I consider this to be a significant improvement.

Also, I am not a doctor, so take this advice at your own risk. But maybe someone reading this will find the ideas outlined in this article worth trying and perhaps even helpful. I came across the solution by accident as I was experimenting with omitting certain types of foods from my diet and wanted to know how it affected me.

I was looking to improve my skin conditions and digestion. For almost 20 years I have suffered from minor rashes and eczema due to my inability to tolerate certain types of foods. I have also had chronic diarrhea and therefore trouble absorbing nutrients. Both of these ailments are something my father has had as well, so I thought it was something I could never change.

Also, I have been allergic since I was 12 years old. I have eaten less hay each spring once everything starts to bloom.

Trying to alleviate those symptoms on my own without the use of man-made drugs or artificial chemicals, I have always been a fan of natural remedies and self-help books. I have always avoided taking medications or supplements. Instead, I made changes to what I eat and took notes on my general feelings or bodily reactions. To increase the chances of obtaining more reliable information, I have often eaten only 2 to 3 different foods for a fixed period of time. Over the years, I have developed a better understanding and awareness of how specific foods affect my overall energy levels, digestion, and food intolerance and allergy symptoms.

Due to my food intolerance symptoms, I ended up eating a lot of white bread, which seems to cause me the least amount of rashes and eczema, while providing the most feeling of fullness. I knew that many allergy sufferers felt better once they completely skipped gluten foods. But I enjoyed the sweet taste and crunchy smell of freshly baked white bread so much, that it was almost 10 years before I decided to try to do without it.

I enjoyed eating white bread on a daily basis for years as it seemed to be one of the few things that didn’t cause too much skin trouble. However, I didn’t realize that I was slowly causing damage to my body in other ways. I had already stopped consuming dairy products in my teens, as these gave me most of the symptoms and discomfort. However, gluten-rich white bread remained my main dish alongside buckwheat for a long period of time.

I decided to go gluten free completely just under a year ago. Already after 3 months I began to notice significant positive changes in my skin, knee arthritis, digestion, hair loss. When the 10 months were up, the only two times I had milder headache symptoms were when I went to visit someone and decided to accept their offer to eat gluten-containing foods. Both times I developed a milder headache within 24 hours of eating those foods. This made me even more aware of the effect gluten has on my body.

Every now and then, I still miss white bread. But once I remember the terrible headaches that I now have no more, it is easier to seek satiety in alternative food sources. Instead, I have substituted white bread for eating more cooked vegetables and fresh fruits. This does not give me headaches, while it has an even more healing effect on my skin, digestion, and other minor bodily conditions that I have developed over the years that are probably related to my gluten intolerance.

For now, an effective way to get rid of migraines is to stay away from gluten.
