Movie Video Games: A New Era of Quality Adaptations

There have been video games tied to movies for practically as long as there have been ways to play video games. While some of them have been great, most have sadly lacked almost every aspect that made the movies they were based on special. This year, thankfully, there are a host of great movie games to enjoy, some of which may be better than the movies themselves!

First up is the official video game based on X-Men Origins: Wolverine. This action game is so much better than the movie itself! Developed by Raven Software, the game features quite a different story to the blockbuster movie, but features the voice and likeness of Hugh Jackman. The game features all of Wolverine’s attributes, which are used in an interesting way, especially the healing factor of him.

As far as Marvel games go, the X-Mane Origins: Wolverine movie video game is extremely violent, as you will see the battlefield littered with bloody body parts and other delicious things. Well, Wolverine certainly has claws. You have a chance to make him use them to their full lethal effect.

Then there’s the new game based on Terminator Salvation, the fourth film in the time-traveling cyborg sci-fi adventure series. Where both Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and its video game counterpart were awful, this seems to go hand-in-hand with the new movie’s bold new direction and is amazing to watch and play. Here’s another example of how movie video games are getting a lot better lately.

Now, with two-player cooperative play, the Terminator franchise is catching up with other games like the mega-hit Gears of War, allowing for some serious split-screen action. Combine this with the remarkably rendered post-apocalyptic world the game (and movie) takes place in, which you can take full advantage of during gameplay, and it’s got a powerful outlook for PS3 and Xbox 360 indeed.

The new Ghostbusters video game is something that is causing quite a stir. With the news that Ghostbusters 3 is finally moving forward, 20 years after the release of Ghostbusters 2, now is the perfect time to reacquaint yourself with the original Ghostbusters characters and situations. Let’s face it, the first movie is an absolute classic in every sense of the word, and there’s finally a video game that does it justice.

The story behind the new Ghostbusters game was written by Harold Ramis and Dan Ackroyd, the writers (and stars) of the first two Ghostbusters movies, so the game may even be canon to some degree. The original four classic Ghostbusters characters have been recreated as stunning digital renderings of the actors, and the whole game looks fantastic. All of your vital stats are displayed on your Proton pack, giving the game a Dead Space-like feel. With all the classic monsters featured in the game, fans will be delighted when they pick it up for their DS, PS3, PC, Xbox 360, or Wii.

After so many mediocre movie-related video games, it seems like new titles being released are being made with much more reverence for the source material and also what fans want from a game based on their favorite movies.
