Coffee Prince is a light-hearted Korean drama that is very popular in Asia after it aired. So what exactly made Coffee Prince such a huge success in Asia? The cast, the characters, the really sweet and loving moments between Han Kyul and Eun Chan and also the background music that really suits the various scenes and brings out the mood of the scene all contributed to the success of the drama. In most dramas, we often see the conflicts between a couple, but the sweet moments of a couple during their dating periods are often not covered. However, in Coffee Prince, we get to see Han Kyul and Eun Chan’s dating process and how their relationship grew and developed over time. It reflects the small but significant issues and situations that many couples can face in real life and this made it easier for the audience to connect with the show.

To admit, I’m a big fan of Yoon Eun Hye after watching her act as Chaegyung in Goong and the main reason I watched Coffee Prince was also because of her, but her acting is really commendable in Coffee Prince. she sees her transform and mature as an actress from Goong to Coffee Prince. Her acting as the tomboy Go Eun Chan is really convincing. She managed to shed the cutesy and girly image commonly associated with her and completely transformed into the Go Eun Chan we see in Coffee Prince. She played the character of Eun Chan down to the smallest detail and all of her actions and movements reflect the character of Eun Chan. From the way she talks (makes her voice deeper), the way she sits, and the way she walks (she changed the way she walks too!), it all shows the Eun Hye’s dedication as an actress. She even cut off the long hair that she kept to fit the image of Eun Chan. There were also many compliments on her acting skills (both from the public and from the experts). Her dedication and professionalism is the reason for Eun Chan’s popularity in Korea as well as the rest of Asia. Besides Yoon Eun Hye, Gong Yoo, the male lead is also very important in the success of Coffee Prince. Gong Yoo is really suitable for the character of Han Kyul. He managed to portray Han Kyul’s deep and complicated feelings as he had his inner struggle of falling in love with Eun Chan (who thought he was a boy) and accepting himself as a ‘gay’. Before Coffee Prince, I watched Gong Yoo’s previous dramas and found that Han Kyul’s character was quite similar to Tae In in Biscuit Teacher and Star Candy. Han Kyul seems to be the adult version of Tae In, as they are both confident and sure of what they want, but they are also childish yet cute at the same time. Han Kyul is more reserved compared to the more spontaneous Tae In, so Han Kyul can rightly be considered the more mature version of Tae In. We can’t really see Gong Yoo’s acting skills when he was in Biscuit Teacher and Star Candy. Therefore, I thought that he was a cute-looking actor with superficial acting skills. But he really surprised me with his ability to portray the perfect emotional struggle that Han Kyul was going through and really touched me with his performance in Coffee Prince. His great performance brought Han Kyul to life and made Coffee Prince an enjoyable show to watch.

In addition to both Gong Yoo and Eun Hye’s great acting skills, they also have excellent on-screen chemistry. The two make a perfect couple and I can’t help but smile every time there are scenes of Han Kyul and Eun Chan’s sweet moments. Their interaction on the screen seems really natural and convincing. Apart from the sweet moments, the hot bed scenes as well as the forced kiss between them were really memorable scenes for them.

Aside from the 2 main leads, Lee Seon Gyeon’s character as Choi Han Seong was also very well played. Although Lee Seon Gyeon may not be as handsome compared to Gong Yoo, he still has a charm about him that draws the audience in. Choi Han Seong may not be as interesting a character as Han Kyul either, but Lee Seon Gyeon managed not to make the character boring. And did I mention Lee Seon Gyeon’s voice? I really like his deep voice (I don’t know how to describe them, but his voice is very nice to listen to).

I think Chae Jung Ahn is pretty, but I find her acting to be average. Until now, I still don’t fully understand Yoo Joo’s character. Maybe this is how Yoo Joo was supposed to be: carefree, unrestrained, and hard to fathom. Sometimes it’s hard to read his expression and understand exactly the emotions he was trying to convey… I don’t know, but this may also be the way the director wants Yoo Joo to be portrayed as…

In addition to the 4 main protagonists, the 3 Princes also played an important role. The Princes each have their own unique character. Min Yeop, the strong and muscular jerk who is totally devoted and loyal to his angel Eun Sae, Ha Rim, the cute and adorable boy who always says “My Chan!!”, and the cool waffle guy Sun Ki, that can’t help. but let yourself be infected by the affectionate Eun Chan, the enthusiastic Ha Rim and the goofy Min Yeop. To add, there is also Mr. Hong, the other president of Coffee Prince. He’s really disgusting and unsanitary with his actions, but he’s still an overall good guy who really supports Eun Chan. The development of the supporting cast also helped make Coffee Prince more complete as a whole and brings a sense of warmth to the drama by seeing the interaction and strong friendship between all the characters in the story.

In addition to the cast and characters in the story, Coffee Prince’s set design is also very well done. The Coffee Prince cafe design was beautifully decorated. Eun Chan’s messy little house always full of dolls/food boxes for work reflects how hard it is for her to earn money, Han Kyul’s modern and elegant house shows her determined and confident character, Han Seong’s simple house with the garden and the vegetation around its simple and sensible character. The recording equipment, the cute music player that also acts as decoration, the guitar and all the other equipment in her house also reflect her work as a musician.

All this required a lot of effort and dedication. Therefore, Coffee Prince is definitely a drama not to be missed due to its excellent production team, actors and actresses, and refreshing approach.
